Caldera de Taburiente: A Natural Amphitheatre Over 8 km Across

The Caldera de Taburiente welcomes you with an 8-km-wide natural amphitheatre and volcanic walls rising up to 2,000 m. Located at La Palma’s heart, this Canary Islands gem blends deep ravines, Canary pine forests and scattered hamlets, interrupted only by torrents and birdsong.

Location & Access

Set amidst La Palma’s central peaks, flanked by Roque de los Muchachos and Pico Bejenado. Main trails start at El Reventón (Route 3.1) or Mirador Montaña Becerra; longer hikes begin from Los Llanos de Aridane or Santa Cruz de La Palma.

How It Formed

About 2 million years ago, a volcanic chamber collapsed, leaving a >10 km² crater. Subsequent erosion carved ravines like the Barranco de las Angustias, creating ever-changing relief with each downpour.

Habitats & Ecosystems

  • Canary Pine Forest: one of the archipelago’s largest Pinus canariensis stands.
  • Laurisilva & Heather: relics of ancient Macaronesian rainforests.
  • Gorge Streams: waterfalls that feed the Barranco de las Angustias.
  • High-altitude Meadows: codeso and retama near the peaks.

Trails & Activities

  • Hiking: 14 km loop through the caldera floor or summit ascents.
  • Controlled Camping: authorized zone at El Reventón (permit required).
  • Wildlife Watching: endemic flora and species like the laurel pigeon.
  • Astronomy: world-class skies at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory.

Best Season & Tips

  • Spring and autumn bring mild 10–20 °C days and low storm risk.
  • Carry water, snacks and wear sturdy footwear and sun protection.
  • Check with El Paso Visitor Centre for permits and route updates.
  • Respect designated camping areas and park closing times.

Protected as a National Park since 1954, the Caldera de Taburiente is celebrated for its geological significance, endemic biodiversity and near-pristine condition.
