Sanabria Lake, Spain’s Largest and Europe’s Biggest Glacial Lake

Sanabria Lake is the largest natural lake in Spain and the Iberian Peninsula, and the biggest glacial lake in Europe, covering 369 ha and reaching 50 m depth.

Glacial Origin

A vast glacier 100,000 years ago sculpted the valley; when it retreated, it left today’s lake and around 20 satellite cirque lakes.

Recreation & Beaches

The lake offers sandy beaches like Custa Llago and Viquiella, plus boat and kayak rentals, fishing, catamaran tours, campgrounds and picnic areas.

Legend of Valverde de Lucerna

Local legend tells of a village that refused shelter to a pilgrim. He cursed it, and overnight the waters rose, burying the town and forming the lake.
