La Fuente Redonda: The Airón Well of Uclés

Scattered throughout ancient Hispania were sacred deep wells known as pozos Airones, dedicated to the enigmatic god Airón. The Fuente Redonda in Uclés is a monumental circular reservoir—15 m in diameter—with stepped stone terraces descending to a clear spring that once supplied the entire village.

Who was the god Airón?

Revered since the Neolithic, Airón was worshipped as lord of deep waters: a deity both life-giving—its springs curing ailments—and fearsome, for its hidden depths were believed to harbor the underworld.

Why is the Fuente Redonda special?

In the 19th century a Roman votive altar dedicated to Airón was discovered here, confirming the well’s ancient ritual function. That altar now resides at the Segóbriga Archaeological Park, while the well itself remains a free, open-air sanctuary.

Visiting today

Located in a pleasant public plaza shaded by centuries-old trees, the well can be admired any time. Look for the explanatory plaque, descend to the edge of the water, and let the calm whisper of the spring transport you to a world of myth and history.

Es un lugar misterioso, único... Para los amantes de los Pozos Airones. Hay otro en la Almarcha en Cuenca. Donde puedes disfrutar de encontrar en los alrededores un yeso rojo muy interesante.
