El Capricho Historic Garden, origins in late 18th century

The Parque del Capricho—also known as the Osuna Ducal Gardens—is a 14 ha artistic garden in Madrid’s Alameda de Osuna. Designed by María Josefa Pimentel, 8th Duchess of Osuna, between 1787–1839, it merges French, English, and Italian styles into a journey of surprises: fountains, ponds, tree-lined promenades, and whimsical follies.
A Stroll Through Three Styles
- French Garden: geometric parterres, straight avenues, classical sculpture fountains
- English Garden: winding paths through oaks, meadows, and natural lakes with rustic bridges
- Italian Garden: terraced levels, balustrades, monumental fountains evoking Renaissance villas
Follies and Hidden Gems
- Old Woman’s House: stone cabin replicating an 18th c. peasant dwelling
- Fisherman’s Cottage: picturesque lakeside pavilion with small dock
- Hedge Maze: boxwood labyrinth leading to a central temple
- Republican Bunker: underground refuge from the Civil War, open to visitors
- Bee House: brick structure originally housing beehives
- Bacchus & Venus Temples: neoclassical gazebos dedicated to classical deities
Flora and Fauna
With 50+ tree species—lilacs, Judas trees, magnolias, cedars, sequoias, horse chestnuts—the park bursts into color in spring. Its lakes and streams host carp, ducks, and herons.
